SOCIETY HILL, S.C. – KTM-mounted riders Kailub Russell and Steward Baylor Jr. prevailed through tough conditions on Sunday to put the orange brand atop two steps of the podium at round five’s Camp Coker GNCC in South Carolina. FMF KTM Factory Racing’s Russell claimed the center spot once again to earn his fourth-straight victory in the class, while also tallying career-win No. 44. Additionally, KTM-supported Baylor continued his perfect podium streak with a 3rd overall finish.

Russell didn’t get the best jump off the start but he positioned himself just inside the top five on the opening lap. The three-time GNCC National Champion jumped into 2nd place by the end of lap one and began his quest for the lead position. Beginning with a 20-second deficit to the leader of Thad DuVall, Russell diligently worked to reduce the gap during the first half of the race. Russell was able to bring himself to within striking distance of DuVall as the two-lap card came out and that’s where he made his charge.

Russell made a pass on DuVall to take over the lead early in the final lap but a quick pit stop by Russell allowed DuVall to reclaim the lead shortly after. However, Russell continued to push himself in the final miles of the race to eventually overtake the lead once again. From there, Russell held strong to ultimately capture his fourth-straight victory of the season. Unfortunately, DuVall ran into an issue soon after, which caused him to lose sight of Russell for good. DuVall finished in the 2nd place position, just ahead of a hard-charging Baylor in 3rd.

Russell: “It was a good day. It didn’t start off so well - we ended up in a 4th place start and got passed by a couple guys in the field. I just wasn’t flowing at the beginning, those guys gapped me in the first lap and a half and once I got to 2nd I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me but I just put my head down and kept charging. I went to work all day, chipped away at it and never gave up. Thad was riding well so it’s going to be an interesting rest of the season for sure. These guys are keeping me on my toes and making me strive a little harder so it’s time to raise the bar again and it’s time to get better.”

Bobbitt maintained a top-ten position throughout the entire three-hour race where he put forth a consistent pace all afternoon. In the end, Bobbitt finished 8th place in the XC1 Open Pro class and 10th overall for the day.

Bobbitt: “This was my first time racing Camp Coker and the dry conditions, dust and exposed tree roots everywhere made it pretty difficult. I rode a pretty consistent pace all day but I definitely need to find more speed to get back to where I know I can finish.”

KTM-mounted rider Jesse Groemm had a solid day of racing in the XC2 250 Pro (16-24) class where he captured a season-best 2nd place in the class and 9th overall for the day.

MORGANTON, N.C. – FMF KTM Factory Racing Team’s Kailub Russell earned his 43rd career-victory in a hard-fought battle on Sunday for Round 4 of the 2017 Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) in Morganton, North Carolina. KTM-Supported rider Steward Baylor Jr. joined Russell atop the overall podium once again with a solid 3rd place finish after coming through the pack from a bad start.

Consistency has earned Russell and Baylor the top two running positions in the Overall Championship Standings as they remain the only two riders to finish on the podium through the first four rounds of racing.

Off the start, FMF KTM Factory Racing teammates Kailub Russell and Russell Bobbitt put themselves into a favorable position early on as they filed into top three positions right away, each aboard a KTM 250 XC-F. Russell began making moves right away as he jumped into the lead before the end of lap one, while Bobbitt settled into the 3rd place position.

With the exception of a few short times early on, Russell was able to maintain the lead position for all seven laps despite heavy pressure by the 2nd place rider of Thad DuVall. The front-runners put on an exciting show for the North Carolina crowd as they raced wheel-to-wheel for a majority of the three-hour race. However, Russell it up a notch as he checked in for the white flag and from there he began his last-lap push to lose DuVall from his rear wheel.

Russell finished strong, capitalizing on a late-in-the-race crash by DuVall, to ultimately finish 18 seconds ahead of 2nd place to claim his third victory of the season. With that, the North Carolina resident notched career-victory No. 43 in front of a home-state crowd to put him within striking distance of Scott Summer’s all-time record of 46 overall wins.

Russell: “It was a tough day, it wasn’t what I was expecting out there as the track developed. I thought it was going to have a lot more moisture than it did - it was quite dry, square edged and pretty choppy. It was hard to get into the flow there at the beginning and I was kind of a little timid with the traction because some places you would have good traction and other places you’d just go away so it was kind of unfamiliar territory on the first lap. But then we got into a good groove and I felt comfortable and laid down a pace that I knew was going to be really fast. I felt really good and solid on the bike. I made a few mistakes, nothing major, but I’m happy to come away with the win.”

With one win behind him, SRT/KTM’s Steward Baylor Jr. continued his streak of consistency with a third consecutive 3rdplace finish. Baylor didn’t get the best start but the South Carolina native was able to quickly push his KTM 350 XC-F into a top five position. From there, Baylor fought hard to eventually make the pass for a podium position on the final lap.

Baylor: “It was a tough day. I was coming in here to salvage points because I tweaked my wrist last weekend and have been struggling. I was trying to avoid the bumps but this is a hard place to do it - there is no smooth line. I was able to make it out and still finish somewhat strong so I’m happy with the day. I’m proud to get 3rd on a day like today and keep it consistent.”

Bobbitt began strong in the 3rd place position but a crash early on caused him to drop back to 10th place. Bobbitt was a bit slow to recover from his crash and lost even more time after making an impromptu pit stop to regain his composure. The multi-time AMA National Enduro Champion finally got back into his stride for the second half of the race and began making passes.

Bobbitt made up substantial ground in the final hour as he climbed his way back up to 8th on the final lap, where he ultimately finished in the XC1 Pro class and 9th overall for the day.

Bobbitt: “Although the results don’t look great on paper, I’m pretty happy with my riding. The track was really rough and unpredictable so it took me a while to get comfortable after I crashed. Things started clicking in the last hour and I was able to get a few guys back before the end.”

MORGANTON, N.C. (March 29, 2015) - The 16th running of the FMF Steele Creek GNCC took place on Sunday at the beautiful Steele Creek Campground, where Kailub Russell saw his third straight victory of the 2015 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis, an AMA National Championship season. N-Fab AmPro Yamaha's Jordan Ashburn put himself into the early lead after grabbing the $250 All Balls Racing Holeshot Award but Russell quickly made his way to the front on the opening lap. The two-time GNCC National Champion created a gap on the rest of the field early on, leaving an exciting battle to shape up for the second place position.

AirGroup/Rockstar Energy/Husqvarna's Ryan Sipes jumped into second on the opening lap, with N-Fab AmPro Yamaha's Jordan Ashburn and Daniel Milner right in the mix. Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KR4/FAR's Thad DuVall also put himself into a favorable position off the start, where he joined the front-runners early on to engage in a battle for the podium position.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Josh Strang got tangled up with another rider just after the start, knocking the Australia native to the back of the pack early on. From there, the top ten running order continuously changed as riders battled it out for valuable championship points at the third round.
JCR Honda's Chris Bach was the next to step into contention for second place after Ashburn made his way into that spot, setting his sights on Russell ahead. Bach chased Ashburn down but it was DuVall who surpassed both riders to inherit the second place position as the three-hour race neared its halfway mark. Strang joined DuVall in what turned out to be an exciting battle between the two Husqvarna-backed riders all afternoon.

Russell kicked it into high gear in the final moments of the seven-lap race as the Factory FMF/KTM rider finished over two and a half minutes ahead of Strang, who came in second. DuVall finished just twenty seconds behind Strang to round out the top three overall for the day. Russell keeps his winning streak alive with a three-for-three score and a 15-point lead over Strang in the championship standings. DuVall sits another 15 points back in third.

XC1 Pro rookie Grant Baylor made a jump in the championship standings on Sunday with an impressive come-from-behind performance to land fourth overall for the day. Baylor began the day just outside the top ten as he pushed his way through the pack all afternoon, ultimately landing just outside the overall podium in his third full-time race in the premier class. Baylor's AmPro Yamaha teammate Jordan Ashburn was able to maintain his top five running from the afternoon, securing fifth overall for the day, where he now sits tied with Grant Baylor for fourth in the championship standings.

In his first race back from injury this season, Moto-Tech/KTM's Steward Baylor put in an impressive ride to finish sixth overall after being forced to make his way through the pack, alongside his brother Grant. Milner put forth his best GNCC performance of the season with seventh overall, while Factory FMF/KTM's Russell Bobbitt took eighth overall. After experiencing a few crashes along the way, Sipes finished the day with ninth place in XC1 and 14th overall, while Husqvarna Canada/Parts Unlimited Canada's Tyler Medaglia rounded out the top ten in XC1 with 25th overall.

The XC2 Pro Lites battle heated up at the third round as DirtWise/Maxxis/KLIM's Jason Thomas emerged victorious after three hours of racing. Thomas began the day with the $100 Hot Cams XC2 Pro Lites Holeshot Award and the early lead in the class. Thomas had early competition from the usual suspects like Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KR4/FAR's Nick Davis and Moto-Tech/KTM's Trevor Bollinger, but as the race wore on the top three began to spread out.
Thomas and Davis came together about halfway through the race, causing both riders to go down just after the finish line. With Bollinger in the lead, RideMPS.com/AMSOIL/Honda's Layne Michael made his way past the downed riders for second, and the lead duo got back up and began charging once again.

However, Davis ran into a mechanical issue that would ultimately remove him from the race and any chance at salvaging championship points for the day. Thomas went on to capture his second straight XC2 victory of the season, with Michael holding on for second and Bollinger, a Morganton, North Carolina native, capturing a third place finish in front of his hometown crowd.
