Which is better standard dirt bike tube, heavy duty dirt bike tube, or ultra heavy duty dirt bike tube? Well like many things in dirt bike riding it comes down to your riding style and terrain. Personally I use heavy duty tubes and have had little to no issues. Before you make your choice make sure you read or post on Tube VS Bib Mousse.

Standard Tube Breakdown
Standard dirt bike tubes are stock on most dirt bikes. Personally I would take them out and put in a set of heavy duty tubes. If you're riding in the back yard close to home, terrain with out rocks, or a tire pressure above 20 a standard tube might suite you well if not upgrade to a heavy duty. [More Info]

Heavy Duty Tube Breakdown
If you're riding with a tire pressure near 13 PSI, terrain that has rocks roots and other objects that can cause a pinch flat then upgrade to a heavy duty dirt bike tube. This is my personal choice and have had very little issue with pinch flats. If I wasn't superstitious I would let you know I have never had a pinch flat, but I'm scared of getting one.  [More Info]

Ultra Heavy Duty Breakdown
Ultra heavy duty dirt bike tubes give you more protection from pinch flats over a standard or heavy duty tubes the only issue I have ran into is they make mounting a dirt bike tire more difficult. If you have someone else mount your tires then go for it. Another reason you might want to upgrade to Ultra heavy duty is if you like to run 8-10 PSI or riding in very sharp rocky terrain. Finding the best tire for sandy or muddy Enduros, Hare Scrambles, or Dual Sports is a question I see and get all the time. The difficult part when it comes to tires every rider is different and air pressure and suspension can make all the difference. We suggest trying a few different tires and finding what suits your riding style best. To help narrow down the search we suggest trying Pirelli XCMS and Michelin S-12.

Michelin S-12

Pro's
  • Great in soft conditions
  • Great in muddy conditions
  • Great in wet conditions
  • Great in rocky conditions
Con's
  • Knobby's tend to roll in harder conditions and road sections

Pirelli XCMS

Pro's

Overall
If you're looking for a good soft terrain tire don't take our word for it just bite the bullet and try them both out. To help you choose which tire to try first if your terrain consist of all soft sandy conditions then try the S-12 first. If your terrain is muddy conditions with hard packed area or road sections try the Pirelli XCMS first. Below are the best prices we could find from the leading online retailers.

Question of the day which is better in your dirt bike Bib Mousse or standard tube. Here are a few questions to help you figure out which is best for you.

1. How many flats have you had in the past year?

1-2 If your using standard dirt bike tubes try using a heavy duty tube.
3 Try increasing your tire pressure to 13psi first. If you're already at that PSI I would get a Mousse
4-More Get a Bib Mousse and don't worry about flats again.

2. What kind of terrain do you ride?

Soft Sand- Stick with a heavy duty tube.
Muddy, Roots, Some Rocks- Stick with a heavy duty tube at 13 PSI or greater
Really Sharp Rocky- Get a Bib Mouse.

3. Can you afford a flat?

Riding a Dual Sport and have time to fix a flat- Stick with Heavy Duty tube and carry an extra.
Play riding near the car - Stick with Heavy Duty tube.
Racing for money- Get a Bib Mousse and don't worry about a DNF.
Long rides deep in wood and can't carry extra tube - Get a Bib Mousse.

4. What's your budget?

Standard Tube - $15
Bib Mousse - $110

There are many factors that go into if you should use a Bib Mousse or a standard dirt bike tube. I personally use tubes but I have very few flats, run 13PSI, and carry an extra tube on long 120 mile + Dual Sport rides. If you answered the questions and decided to get a Bib Mousse below are the best prices we could find at the leading online store.

Finding the best dirt bike tire pressure depends on the terrain you ride, and the tires you use. The way we suggest finding the perfect pressure is to simply play with the pressure until you find what you like. Most will suggest 12-14 PSI and I personally run 13 PSI. One tip we highly suggest is a good dirt bike tire pressure gauge and reading our article on Bib Mousse vs Standard Tubes.

Pressure Test Tips
  • Lower pressure until you feel rim hitting or pinch flats occur.
  • Increase pressure until grip is compromised.
